Lessons for Intermediate Players

Again though each studentʼs needs and circumstances are so varied,I try to balance lesson plans that focus on important musical elements that promote growth musically such as scales and arpeggios ,harmony and theory , ear training, technique etc.. along with applying these concepts in a musically relevant scenario .The scenario can be a song or also playing along with a sequenced groove, that is illuminating a specific subject. I use a midi sequencer(Mac/Cubase/DP) in most of my lessons, especially intermediate and advanced students because even at an early stage of a musicianʼs development it becomes quickly apparent how important a good rhythmic feel is. Knowing what to work on and how to work on it is essential to an individualʼs progress. Sequencers are an awesome practice tool and of course very useful in many other applications.

Though this maybe a generalization, these are some common criteria for determining if someone is at an intermediate level.

  • playing for about 5 years(maybe more)
  • plays in time fairly well
  • can play some full songs
  • some group experience
  • limited overall musical knowledge/patchy fretboard knowledge
  • basic improviser
